Al Johnstone is a documentary director and accomplished shooter, working across film and broadcast, committed to making emotionally intimate, creative and purposeful work. 

Al has worked on a wide range of high-quality documentary projects for major broadcasters and streamers such as BBC, C4, Sky, whether observational, issue-led or current affairs, most recently in the role of Shooting Producer/Director. 

As an independent filmmaker, Al’s films have been selected for several BAFTA-qualifying festivals including BFI Flare, London Short Film Festival and Aesthetica. She is an alumna of the National Film and Television School, and her graduation film ‘Beyond Eden’ is currently being developed into a feature documentary. 

Al is currently on the BAFTA Connect scheme and was nominated as one of The Dots’ ‘LGBTQ+ Leaders to Watch’.
